Are Blood Pressure Supplements OTC the Same as Medicine?
Blood pressure supplements OTC are sold without a prescription, but they are not over-the-counter medicines. The FDA does not approve supplements before sale, and NCCIH says none has been shown to work like blood pressure drugs. Melonex is a dietary supplement: 60 capsules, one 500 mg blend, no study of the product itself.

What does OTC mean for a blood pressure supplement?
OTC means you can buy it without a prescription. For a supplement, that is the whole meaning.
The word does not tell you the product was reviewed or shown to work. Supplements follow separate rules from drugs and foods (FDA, Dietary Supplements).
The FDA cannot approve a supplement before it is marketed (FDA, Q&A on Dietary Supplements). Melonex falls in this group.
How is an OTC supplement different from an OTC medicine?
A medicine label shows a Drug Facts box and an approved use. A supplement label shows a Supplement Facts panel and no approved use.
| OTC medicine | Dietary supplement | |
|---|---|---|
| Label panel | Drug Facts | Supplement Facts |
| FDA review before sale | Yes, for approved uses | No (FDA, Q&A on Dietary Supplements) |
| May say it treats disease | For approved uses | No (FDA, Structure/Function Claims) |
| Carries the FDA disclaimer | No | Yes, on health claims (FDA, Q&A on Dietary Supplements) |
A supplement may describe how a nutrient affects the body, but may not claim to diagnose, treat, cure or prevent a disease (FDA, Structure/Function Claims). That is why the Melonex front panel uses starred wording and the FDA statement.
What is on the Melonex label, line by line?
Melonex lists three names inside one 500 mg blend, and prints no amount for any of them.
The label wording is "Heart Support*", "Circulation Support*" and "Natural Formula*". The star leads to the FDA statement: not evaluated, not intended to diagnose, treat, cure or prevent any disease.
- 1L- Citrulline dl - Malate167 mg or more of the 500 mg blend
- 2L-Arginine (Alpha-Ketoglutarate dihydrate)under 250 mg of the 500 mg blend
- 3L - Arginine HCLunder 167 mg of the 500 mg blend
From the Supplement Facts panel, in label order. The label prints 500 mg for the whole Proprietary Blend and no amount for any name, so the limits shown come from the order alone. Other ingredients (hydroxypropyl methylcellulose capsule, microcrystalline cellulose, magnesium stearate) are not part of the blend.
Pooled trials of L-arginine alone found small average drops in blood pressure at grams a day (Shiraseb 2022, arginine and BP). Melonex is 500 mg in total. No trial tested the capsules.

See packsIs an OTC supplement safe to add to prescribed medicine?
Not automatically. Ask your doctor or pharmacist first, because supplements can interact with medicines (NIH ODS, Dietary Supplements consumer sheet).
Keep taking prescribed blood pressure medicine exactly as directed (AHA, Managing BP Medications). The only way to know your numbers is to measure them; high blood pressure usually has no symptoms (CDC, About High Blood Pressure).
Report a bad reaction to the FDA through MedWatch (FDA, MedWatch). Chest pain or stroke signs mean 911.
The label asks pregnant or nursing mothers, anyone under 18 and anyone with a known medical condition to consult a physician first.

FAQ01
Melonex questions people ask
Is Melonex an over-the-counter medicine?
No. Melonex is a dietary supplement in capsules, not a drug. The FDA does not approve supplements before sale (FDA, Q&A on Dietary Supplements), and no study has tested the product. It does not replace a prescribed blood pressure medicine.
Do OTC blood pressure supplements work?
Evidence is mixed and ingredient-specific. NCCIH says no supplement has been shown to work like blood pressure drugs (NCCIH, Hypertension). Some trials of single amino acids show small average changes, at grams a day. Ask a doctor about your own numbers.
Where can I report a problem with a supplement?
Report it to the FDA through MedWatch, its safety reporting program for consumers and professionals (FDA, MedWatch). For an order problem with Melonex, call the order desk at +1 (855) 889-3137 with your order ID.
