What Is High Blood Pressure? Numbers, Categories and Where Supplements Fit
High blood pressure is a pressure reading that stays at or above 130/80 mm Hg. It usually has no symptoms, so only a measurement shows it. About 48.1% of U.S. adults have it, and only about 1 in 4 of them has it under control. A supplement such as Melonex is not a treatment.

The definition01
What is high blood pressure?
High blood pressure is readings that stay at or above 130/80 mm Hg (CDC, About High Blood Pressure). It is also called hypertension.
Blood pressure is the force of blood against the walls of your arteries. The top number, systolic, is the pressure when the heart beats. The bottom number, diastolic, is the pressure between beats.
High pressure makes the heart and vessels work harder. The CDC counts it as a primary or contributing cause of 680,179 U.S. deaths in 2024 (CDC, High Blood Pressure Facts). It rarely causes symptoms, so a cuff or clinic reading is the real score (NHLBI, What Is High Blood Pressure).
Only a doctor or other medical professional can confirm a diagnosis (AHA, Understanding Blood Pressure Readings). One high reading is a reason to check again.
The ranges02
What are the blood pressure categories?
There are five ranges: normal, elevated, stage 1, stage 2 and a crisis range above 180 and above 120 (NHLBI, What Is High Blood Pressure) (AHA, Understanding Blood Pressure Readings).
The higher number decides the category. A reading of 128/92 is stage 1, because the bottom number alone crosses the line.
| Category | Top number | Bottom number | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Normal | Below 120 | and | Below 80 |
| Elevated | 120 to 129 | and | Below 80 |
| Stage 1 | 130 to 139 | or | 80 to 89 |
| Stage 2 | 140 or higher | or | 90 or higher |
| Severe or emergency | Above 180 | and/or | Above 120 |
With no symptoms, call your healthcare professional. With chest pain, trouble speaking or other new symptoms, call 911 (AHA, Understanding Blood Pressure Readings).
Try a reading03
Where does my blood pressure reading fall?
Type your two numbers into the gauge to see which range they land in. It measures nothing and diagnoses nothing.
Use a reading you took with a validated cuff, seated and rested. The home monitoring guide shows how.
Type a reading to see where it falls.
- NormalBelow 120 and below 80
- Elevated120 to 129 and below 80
- Stage 1130 to 139 or 80 to 89
- Stage 2140 or higher or 90 or higher
- Crisis rangeAbove 180 and/or above 120: call your clinician; with chest pain or trouble speaking, call 911
Bands from the CDC, NHLBI and AHA (CDC, About High Blood Pressure) (NHLBI, What Is High Blood Pressure) (AHA, Understanding Blood Pressure Readings). One reading is not a diagnosis: only a doctor or other medical professional can confirm high blood pressure, and no tool on the gauge measures your pressure. Use a validated upper-arm cuff (AHA, Home Blood Pressure Monitoring).
How common04
How common is high blood pressure?
Very common. About 48.1% of U.S. adults, or 119.9 million people, have high blood pressure, counting those who take medicine for it (CDC, High Blood Pressure Facts).
Only about 1 in 4 of them, 22.5%, has it under control (CDC, High Blood Pressure Facts). Many people do not know they have it. The NHLBI notes that about 1 in 3 adults with high pressure are unaware and untreated (NHLBI, What Is High Blood Pressure).
Simple arithmetic shows the gap. If 48.1% have it and 22.5% of those control it, then roughly three in four people with high blood pressure are not at goal.
The CDC lists high blood pressure with high cholesterol and smoking as key risk factors for heart disease, which causes 1 in 5 U.S. deaths (CDC, About Heart Disease). A yearly check is the cheapest fix for the awareness gap (NHLBI, What Is High Blood Pressure).

What helps lower high blood pressure naturally?
Food, salt, movement, weight, sleep and not smoking have the best evidence. These lifestyle steps are where treatment starts, and some people also need medicine (CDC, About High Blood Pressure) (NHLBI, What Is High Blood Pressure).
The NHLBI describes DASH as a flexible eating plan with a sodium limit of 2,300 mg a day, or 1,500 mg for a larger drop (NHLBI, DASH Eating Plan). The AHA gives the same ceiling and notes Americans eat over 3,100 mg a day on average (AHA, How Much Sodium Per Day).
Mayo Clinic puts rough numbers on it: about 1 mm Hg per kilogram lost, 5 to 8 mm Hg from regular aerobic exercise, and 5 to 6 mm Hg from sodium at 1,500 mg or less (Mayo Clinic, 10 Ways to Lower BP). These are estimates and vary by person.
- SodiumAmericans eat over 3,100 mg a day on average; AHA says no more than 2,300 mg, ideally 1,500. Limiting it to 1,500 mg may lower pressure about 5 to 6 mm Hg. (AHA, How Much Sodium Per Day) (Mayo Clinic, 10 Ways to Lower BP)
- WeightAbout 1 mm Hg lower for each kilogram (2.2 pounds) lost, per Mayo Clinic's estimate. (Mayo Clinic, 10 Ways to Lower BP)
- Eating patternA DASH-style plan with less salt can work about as well as medicine for some people; Mayo estimates up to 11 mm Hg from a healthy diet. (NHLBI, DASH Eating Plan) (NHLBI, High Blood Pressure Treatment) (Mayo Clinic, 10 Ways to Lower BP)
- ActivityRegular aerobic exercise lowers systolic pressure about 5 to 8 mm Hg. Adults are advised 2.5 hours of moderate activity a week. (Mayo Clinic, 10 Ways to Lower BP) (AHA, Life's Essential 8)
- Tobacco and sleepQuitting tobacco and getting 7 to 9 hours of sleep are two of Life's Essential 8. (AHA, Life's Essential 8)
- Not knowingAbout 1 in 3 U.S. adults with high blood pressure are unaware and untreated. It has no symptoms, so only measuring shows it. (NHLBI, What Is High Blood Pressure) (CDC, About High Blood Pressure)
The heart-healthy habits guide covers each one in turn.
Supplements06
Do high blood pressure supplements work?
Not like medicine. The NCCIH says no dietary supplement has been shown to have effects comparable to the drugs used to treat hypertension (NCCIH, Hypertension).
The AHA says no pill, vitamin or drink can replace prescription medicine and lifestyle changes, and that some supplements can interact with blood pressure medicines or raise blood pressure (AHA, Managing BP Medications).
Some studies of single amino acids show small average changes. A pooled analysis of 22 trials of L-arginine by itself found about 6.40 mm Hg on top and 2.64 on the bottom, at grams a day (Shiraseb 2022, arginine and BP). Citrulline results are mixed (Barkhidarian 2019, citrulline and BP) (Mirenayat 2018, citrulline and BP).
Melonex lists citrulline malate and two arginine forms in one 500 mg blend, with no amounts printed. No study tested it. Read the supplement evidence guide for the full picture.
Never cut back or quit a blood pressure medicine because you started a supplement. Check with a pharmacist first (AHA, Managing BP Medications).
Next steps07
When should you see a doctor about blood pressure?
See a doctor if any reading is at or above 130/80, and get a check at least once a year (NHLBI, What Is High Blood Pressure).
Go sooner if you are pregnant, have diabetes or kidney trouble, or already take medicine. Bring a week of home readings if you have them.
- Two readings a minute apart, same time each day.
- A list of every medicine and supplement, with the doses.
- Questions about food, salt and activity that fit your life.
Chest pain, trouble breathing, fainting, or a drooping face, weak arm or slurred speech means call 911 (AHA, Warning Signs of a Heart Attack) (CDC, Signs and Symptoms of Stroke). See the warning signs guide.
FAQ08
Melonex questions people ask
What is a normal blood pressure reading?
A normal reading is below 120 over below 80 mm Hg. Elevated starts at 120 to 129 over below 80, and stage 1 high blood pressure starts at 130 or 80. Confirm any diagnosis with a doctor (AHA, Understanding Blood Pressure Readings).
What is the difference between systolic and diastolic?
Systolic is the top number, the pressure when your heart beats. Diastolic is the bottom number, the pressure between beats. A reading is flagged when either one crosses a category line, so both matter.
Can you feel high blood pressure?
Usually not. High blood pressure typically has no symptoms, which is why measuring is the only way to know (CDC, About High Blood Pressure). A headache or flushed face is not a reliable sign, so check with a cuff instead of guessing.
What blood pressure is a hypertensive crisis?
Readings above 180 and/or above 120 are the crisis range. With no symptoms, call your healthcare professional. With chest pain, trouble speaking or other new symptoms, call 911 (AHA, Understanding Blood Pressure Readings).
Are high blood pressure supplements safe with medicine?
Not always. Some can interact with blood pressure medicines or raise blood pressure, so check with a doctor or pharmacist before starting one (AHA, Managing BP Medications). Never stop a prescribed medicine without your doctor.
Does Melonex treat high blood pressure?
No. Melonex is a dietary supplement, not a medicine, and no study has tested it. Its label lists a 500 mg blend of three amino acid forms with no amounts, and it makes no treatment claim.
