Store-Brand or Branded Heart Health Supplements? Compare the Dose
Store-brand and branded heart health supplements at Target or any chain can be equal or very different, and only the panel shows which. Compare the dose per serving with the amount studied. Melonex shows one 500 mg blend with no separate amounts, while studies of its amino acids used 3 to 8 g a day for citrulline.

Is a store-brand heart supplement as good as a branded one?
It can be. The logo does not decide it. The dose, the ingredient form and the quality checks do.
Both kinds follow the same federal rules, including manufacturing practice rules (21 CFR Part 111 (eCFR)). Both can use a proprietary blend that hides amounts (21 CFR 101.36, Supplement Facts). A store brand may be cheaper, and a branded bottle may carry an outside quality mark, or the reverse.
So skip the brand debate and compare the panels.
How do you compare doses between two heart supplements?
Line up the same ingredient, in the same form, per serving. Then compare each with the amount a trial used.
Forms matter. Citrulline malate and plain citrulline are not the same weight, and a salt such as arginine HCl weighs more than the arginine inside it. The table lists the steps.
| Step | Do this |
|---|---|
| 1 | Find mg per serving for each ingredient |
| 2 | Check the form (salt, malate, HCl) |
| 3 | Multiply by servings a day |
| 4 | Compare with a trial dose |
| 5 | Check the quality mark |
What doses did the studies of these amino acids use?
Grams a day. Citrulline studies ran 3 to 8 g a day (Cleveland Clinic, L-citrulline), an AAKG sports trial used 4 g per dose and 12 g a day (Campbell 2006, L-arginine AKG trial), and arginine trials mostly used several grams a day (Shiraseb 2022, arginine and BP).
If a bottle's blend is in hundreds of milligrams, the bottle is not at those doses, whoever sells it. That is arithmetic, not a verdict on the product.

See packsWhere do the Melonex ceilings land on that scale?
Far below the studied amounts. The whole blend is 500 mg, and label order caps the second name at 250 mg and the third at 167 mg.
The first name is at least 167 mg. The bars compare each label ceiling with a studied amount. No trial tested Melonex, so treat the bars as a size check only. See the proprietary blend page for the full sums.
Keep taking prescribed medicine, and ask a pharmacist first. If you try it, a 3-bottle pack is $207 and a 6-bottle pack is $294.

FAQ01
Melonex questions people ask
Do store-brand supplements follow the same rules?
Yes. Federal manufacturing rules apply to anyone who makes, packs, labels or holds a dietary supplement (21 CFR Part 111 (eCFR)). Following the rules is not the same as being tested for what works, so compare panels either way.
Why is Melonex hard to compare with other heart capsules?
Because it prints one blend total, 500 mg, and not the amount of each name. Federal rules allow that if the names run from heaviest to lightest (21 CFR 101.36, Supplement Facts). You can compute ceilings, but not actual amounts.
How much citrulline do studies use compared with a 500 mg blend?
Trials of citrulline used 3 to 8 g a day, which is 3,000 to 8,000 mg (Cleveland Clinic, L-citrulline). Even two Melonex capsules give 1,000 mg of the whole blend, and citrulline malate is only part of it.
